Fair Tax

I certainly favor the abolishment of all preemptive taxes, but Bruce Bartlett explains that the Fair Tax may not be a reasonable alternative to the income tax. Mankiw links to this 14-page analysis of the Fair Tax, which explains more.
I’m even more concerned about restraining government spending, which might would be possible if we just had a mechanism to limit the national government’s authority to engage in redistributionist spending. Oh wait, we do: the U.S. Constitution, but few in government seem to remember this document.
